Not My Weekend Music Video (Go Get Out)

A little while back I was asked to help make a music video for the band "Not My Weekend." I was, of course, excited, as this was one of the largest projects I had been a part of since leaving college. However going into it, there were three things on my mind: #1. I was likely going to be the only one working on the video itself. Which was cool, it meant I was going to be responsible for everything people saw, but on the other hand it meant I was going to be responsible for everything people saw. So, you know, a little nerve-wracking. #2. As I was starting I wasn’t really given a clear date on when this need to be finished, so I had to assume it would likely be sooner rather than later. #3. At the moment I was focusing more on storyboards and animatics, as I had found it to be what I enjoyed more, and was (actually, still am) looking for job making them.

Keeping all that in mind, I suggested to the band I make something that lay between an animatic and full animation for the video. Thankfully they liked the idea, so I got to work, eventually aiming for something that kind of felt like a comic in video form, If that makes sense to anyone else.

However, COVID changed a few things. Because of it, the video, which was originally set come out in late 2020, was pushed back to early next year. With a little extra time, I was asked if there was anyway I could make a few bits fully animated. I agreed to the idea, but didn’t want to compromise the unique feel I thought I had made. So I went looking for a few portions I thought would make sense to animate fully, and started there, hoping I would manage to find a good balance between to two approaches.

(P.S. If you’re feeling a bit crazy, try translating the binary code segment of the video, It DOES actually say something. Nothing important, just a fun little bit of trivia regarding “Not My Weekend” and this video.)
